Travancore School was established to provide inpatient school support for students undergoing treatment for mental illness. However, progress in mental health to reduce length of inpatient stays and to increase the focus on community based services has meant a change in the School’s service balance. Travancore has adapted and developed its services to meet the emerging requirements of mental health services and the growing interest in schools for specialised assistance and support in better understanding and managing mental health issues.
Consistent with the changing focus in mental health delivery, Travancore now provides both direct inpatient teaching services, while also providing services to the school community with an increasing emphasis on prevention, early intervention, identification and support where young people exhibit symptoms consistent with an emerging mental illness. This development in service strategies has led Travancore, through its newer programs – and in line with the major philosophies and orientation of health services – to provide support for teachers and young people at a local level and within schools.
The Travancore School’s role is to provide a link between the mental health and education sectors in the following ways:
By providing inpatient programs. By providing group programs. Through liaison and support for students. By providing consultancy and support for schools. Though collaboration with community outpatient and school support services. Through the provision of professional development for teachers, health professionals and support workers. School staff work collaboratively with clinical teams and DEECD schools in the western region. |
